VALE Denis Michael Cordingley

Boronia Cricket Club is saddened to hear of the passing of Denis Cordingley.

Earlier this year, 9th May, Denis Cordingley passed away after 12 months of ill health due to several strokes.

The name, Denis Cordingley, means a lot to our club’s history due his contribution in shaping the club we see today.

Denis was a long serving member both on and off the field. Unfortunately, much of his playing days date back further than our records, however, we have traced his stats from 1977 onwards:

  • 155 club games – 29 (2’s) 34 (3’s) 23 (4’s) 47 (5’s) 22 (6’s)
  • 72 club wickets – 60 in the 5th XI (6th most)
  • 7/27 – Best Bowling figures

Nevertheless, most of Denis’s influence on the club came in his off-field roles. Having served as Secretary from 1972-1975, Denis went on to becoming President from 1975-1977.

During the club’s transition from Park Crescent to our current home at Tormore Reserve, Denis played a pivotal role along with other key committee figures. This saw the birth of turf cricket at Boronia Cricket Club.

In 1978, Denis’s contribution to the club was acknowledged when he was elevated to Life Member status – the highest honour the club can bestow an individual.

Denis is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maureen, his daughter Lisa and son David.
